When Should I Take My Child to the Dentist for the First Time?

One of the most common questions we hear from new parents is: "When should my child have their first dental visit?" At Lucas Elite Dental Studio, we recommend scheduling your child's first appointment by their first birthday or within six months of their first tooth appearing — whichever comes first.

Why So Early?

Early dental visits serve several important purposes. They allow Dr. Hajiyani to check for early signs of tooth decay, even in baby teeth. They help assess your child's jaw development and tooth eruption pattern. They give parents guidance on proper oral hygiene for their child's age.

Perhaps most importantly, early dental visits help your child become comfortable with the dental environment before any treatment is needed, setting the stage for a lifetime of positive dental experiences.

What to Expect at the First Visit

Your child's first appointment will be gentle and exploratory. We'll examine the teeth and gums, check for any developmental concerns, and clean the teeth if your child is cooperative. We'll demonstrate proper brushing technique and answer all your questions about diet, fluoride, pacifier use, and more.

Bringing Your Child for Regular Visits

After the first visit, most children should see the dentist every six months for checkups and cleanings. These routine visits allow us to monitor development, apply sealants when permanent molars come in, and address any concerns before they become serious problems.
