Root canal therapy has one of the worst reputations in dentistry — a reputation that, frankly, it doesn't deserve. At Lucas Elite Dental Studio, we want to set the record straight by debunking the most common myths about this valuable, tooth-saving procedure.
Myth #1: Root Canals Are Extremely Painful
This is the biggest myth. Modern root canal treatment is no more uncomfortable than getting a filling. We use effective local anesthesia, and most patients are genuinely surprised by how comfortable the procedure is. What IS painful is the tooth infection that makes a root canal necessary — the root canal actually relieves that pain.
Myth #2: It's Better to Just Pull the Tooth
Extracting a tooth might seem like the simpler solution, but keeping your natural tooth is almost always preferable. Missing teeth can cause neighboring teeth to shift, affect your bite, and lead to bone loss. Dental implants and bridges are excellent but represent additional procedures, time, and expense.
Myth #3: Root Canal-Treated Teeth Don't Last
A properly treated and crowned tooth can last a lifetime. Root canal treatment has a success rate of over 95%. Many root canal-treated teeth outlast other teeth in the mouth.
Myth #4: If My Tooth Doesn't Hurt, I Don't Need a Root Canal
Not necessarily. Some infected teeth produce no symptoms. This is why regular dental checkups with X-rays are so important — we can detect problems before they become painful emergencies.
