Preventive Care

How Often Do You Really Need to See the Dentist?

"Twice a year" is the traditional advice for dental visits — but is that right for everyone? At Lucas Elite Dental Studio, we believe in personalized dental care, which means the ideal visit frequency varies based on your unique oral health needs.

The Standard Recommendation

For most adults with generally healthy teeth and gums, seeing the dentist every six months for a checkup and cleaning is ideal. These twice-yearly visits allow us to catch problems early, remove plaque and tartar buildup that leads to cavities and gum disease, and provide preventive treatments like fluoride and sealants.

When You Might Need More Frequent Visits

Some patients benefit from more frequent visits — every three to four months. This is typically recommended for patients with active gum disease or a history of periodontal problems, people with a high cavity risk, patients undergoing orthodontic treatment, individuals with certain health conditions like diabetes, and smokers or tobacco users.

When Can You Visit Less Often?

Some patients with excellent oral hygiene, low cavity risk, and a long history of healthy dental visits may be able to extend to annual checkups. However, this should always be based on Dr. Hajiyani's assessment of your individual risk factors.

What Happens If You Skip Visits?

Skipping dental visits — even for just a year or two — allows small problems to grow into large ones. A tiny cavity that could have been treated with a simple filling may progress to require a root canal or extraction. Gum disease, caught early, is highly treatable; advanced gum disease is much harder to manage.
